Know Your Eye Vocabulary

When you come in to see your eye care professional, it is important that you understand the terminology that pertains to the eyes. Here is a brief overview of the eye’s anatomy, and some information on common eye conditions.

  • Cornea: the clear front part of the eye
  • Lens: the eyes natural lens that causes images to focus on the retina
  • Retina: the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye
  • Optic Nerve: carries impulses for sight to the brain
  • Vitreous: the transparent, gelatinous substance that fills the back of the eye
  • Myopia: nearsightedness
  • Hyperopia: farsightedness
  • Presbyopia: the normal aging of the eye, which causes the need for “reading glasses”
  • Glaucoma: a treatable condition that is identified by increased pressure in the eye
  • Cataract: clouding of the lens of the eye, which can occur with aging
