Know Your Eye Vocabulary
When you come in to see your eye care professional, it is important that you understand the terminology that pertains to the eyes. Here is a brief overview of the eye’s anatomy, and some information on common eye conditions.
- Cornea: the clear front part of the eye
- Lens: the eyes natural lens that causes images to focus on the retina
- Retina: the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye
- Optic Nerve: carries impulses for sight to the brain
- Vitreous: the transparent, gelatinous substance that fills the back of the eye
- Myopia: nearsightedness
- Hyperopia: farsightedness
- Presbyopia: the normal aging of the eye, which causes the need for “reading glasses”
- Glaucoma: a treatable condition that is identified by increased pressure in the eye
- Cataract: clouding of the lens of the eye, which can occur with aging
